Increasingly, the Web is becoming the primary user interface for software applications. Despite their popularity, currently there are no user interface design standards for designing web-based applications. Consequently, each application’s appearance and behavior varies widely, even within the same company. To address the usability problems in Web application designs, many corporations develop user interface design guidelines, but these are often too general (not providing enough information to assist in decision making), too specific, or may conflict with one another. Furthermore, they do not help in user interface “reuse,” requiring recreation of interface components even for similar user interactions. We believe that using interface design patterns can address many of these concerns and complement design guidelines to create better (i.e., usable, consistent and reusable) user interface designs and improve usability of Web applications. This workshop is designed for human factors practitioners who have some experience designing user interfaces. Participants should have a basic level of understanding about usability engineering principles (such as usability heuristics) and user interface design guidelines.
